N. Max Dunning (1873-1945) was a well-respected and widely known architect whose practice was based in Chicago but whose work was spread across the United States and Canada. Dunning completed his architectural education in the ateliers of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Architectural Club. His involvement in the Chicago Architectural Club introduced him to the group of architects whose philosophy and designs, known as the Chicago School of architecture, would become the most influential force in the field of architecture at the beginning of the twentieth century. Dunning helped spread that design philosophy by organizing exhibits, classes and meetings showcasing progressive architecture. He was one of the founders of the Architectural League of America and served as its president, and through his work with that organization and others, he disseminated progressive and modem design to the country. From 1907 - 1933 Dunning designed a multitude of buildings including residential, religious, civic and institutional in a variety of architectural styles, generally following the trends of the day but usually with a modem touch. His designs for commercial and industrial buildings were among his best work, according to his contemporary architectural critics. Dunning incorporated the Chicago School of Architecture's philosophy of functionalism expressed through design, while creatively embracing technology and using minimal ornamentation. His progressive yet elegant, contemporary industrial buildings foreshadowed modern-era factory designs and glass curtain wall office towers of the mid-20th century. Due to financial constraints caused by the Great Depression, Dunning closed his firm and moved to Washington D.C., becoming an expert in public housing and supervising the design and construction of public buildings for the New Deal-era Public Works Administration. Dunning had a productive and varied career, during a time period of architectural achievement, technological and industrial development, and profound economic change and upheaval. His designs reflected the needs and interests of the age, and when circumstances forced him to close his practice, he turned his sights and talents on addressing some of the greatest needs of the era, public housing and public works.
